INTECON Employee Recognized

Mon, 12 Sep 2011

Mr David Knitt, an INTECON employee supporting the Integrated Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment (ITW/AA) mission for NORAD at Peterson AFB, was recently recognized for his volunteer efforts with Junior Achievement (JA).  Mr Knitt provides economic education at local high schools to teach young people a variety of lessons.  JA is the country's oldest and largest provider of economic education for young people.  JA  programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to manage their money, generate wealth, how jobs are created, and learn the value of contributing to their communities.  JA primarily uses volunteers from the community to deliver the curriculum to elementary, middle school, and high school students while sharing their personal experiences with students.

Junior Achievement facilitates a partnership between business and the schools. Schools provide access to the classroom, local businesses provide the volunteers, and the JA staff provides the orientation and training, materials, and the assistance to make it happen successfully. Mr Knitt has been a JA volunteer for over 19 years, both in the middle schools and high schools in the Colorado Springs area and he thoroughly enjoys interacting with the kids.  For people that might be interested in becoming volunteers, Mr Knitt recommends observing a JA class conducted by a volunteer so to better understand how a JA class operates and how JA material is presented.

Depending on the grade level and curriculum, classes are normally weekly for one class period and the curriculum lasts from five to eight weeks.  All JA program kits are self-contained with all necessary materials for successful delivery of the material. The teacher and volunteer may meet in advance of the first class to provide insight into the class and discuss any possible student related issues.

If interested or if you have additional questions, you can contact Mr Knitt (david.knitt.ctr@northcom.mil) or Monica M. Gillooly, Manager of Volunteer Relations for Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado, email: monica.gillooly@ja.org.
